11 years ago today, Boulder, Colorado's fresh mountain air was shrouded in smoke. Forest fires? Guess again.

Over 10,000 students, teachers, and tourists gathered on the University of Colorado campus for the unofficial and unsanctioned 4/20 communal smoke-out. Hoolah hoops, drum circles, and glass-blown paraphernalia abounded.

 

The First Snake Oil Salesman

When you hear the phrase, ‘snake oil salesman’, you probably imagine a top-hatted charlatan, selling mysterious apothecary bottles across the American West. (Or maybe you think of these GOOP-approved healing stickers).

So why is snake oil such a bad thing? Well, it isn’t. Or at least it wasn’t.

One 4-letter phrase changed the way the world thinks about diamonds. In fact, it may be the reason you're saving up for a diamond engagement ring right now. Or wearing one! (Or discovering one in your Wendy's frosty.)

In 1947, De Beers diamond company launched an ad campaign using the famous slogan, "A diamond is forever."
